What is JoSAA?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is the single centralized body that handles seat allocation for all IITs, NITs, IIITs, and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) in India. If you have cleared JEE Main or JEE Advanced, JoSAA is the only way to get admission to these institutes.
JoSAA 2026 will allocate approximately 57,000+ seats across 119 institutes including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, 25 IIITs, and 40 GFTIs.
Who is Eligible for JoSAA 2026?
- JEE Advanced 2026 qualifiers → eligible for IITs + NITs + IIITs + GFTIs
- JEE Main 2026 qualifiers (Paper 1) → eligible for NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs only
- Your rank used is CRL (Common Rank List) for General, and category rank for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS
- PwD candidates have a separate horizontal reservation across all categories
JoSAA 2026: Complete Step-by-Step Process
Step 1 — Registration & Choice Filling
After JEE Advanced results, JoSAA opens the online portal (josaa.nic.in) for registration. You need to:
- 1Login with your JEE Main / JEE Advanced application number and password
- 2Fill personal details, select category, upload documents
- 3Fill and lock your choices — colleges and branches in your priority order
- 4Pay the seat acceptance fee (if allotted a seat)
Step 2 — Seat Allotment Rounds (Round 1 to Round 5)
JoSAA runs 5 main rounds of seat allotment (previously 6, reduced from 2024). In each round, the algorithm matches your rank against your choices in the order you filled them, and allots you the best available seat.
| Round | What happens | Your action |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | First allotment based on choices & rank | Accept seat, pay fee, upload docs |
| Round 2 | Upgrades if better choice opened up | Accept / wait for upgrade |
| Round 3 | Further upgrades possible | Accept / wait for upgrade |
| Round 4 | More seats open as students withdraw | Accept or float for upgrade |
| Round 5 (Final) | Last JoSAA round — freeze your seat | Freeze and report to institute |
Step 3 — Seat Acceptance Options: Float vs Freeze vs Slide
After each round allotment, you have three options:
- Float — Accept current seat but remain in the pool for upgrades to any higher-priority choice
- Slide — Accept current seat but only allow upgrades within the same institute (different branch)
- Freeze — Accept current seat and withdraw from further rounds (no more upgrades)
Step 4 — CSAB Special Rounds (After JoSAA)
After JoSAA rounds end, CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) runs Special Stray Vacancy rounds for any remaining vacant seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. This is a second chance if you did not get a seat in JoSAA. Separate registration is required.
