The Three Options After Each JoSAA Round
| Option | What it means | Upgrade possible? | When to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Float | Accept current seat, stay in pool for ALL higher choices | Yes — to any higher-priority choice | Early rounds when you want any upgrade |
| Slide | Accept current seat, allow upgrade ONLY within same institute | Yes — but only same college, different branch | When you love the college but want a better branch |
| Freeze | Accept current seat, exit upgrade pool permanently | No — locked in this seat | Final round OR when 100% satisfied |
| Withdraw | Give up the seat entirely, exit JoSAA | No — leaves JoSAA | Only if joining another institute (state/private) |
Float — Explained
Float means: "I will take this seat for now, but please continue looking for a better match among my higher-priority choices." In the next round, if any choice ranked above your current allotment opens up for your rank, you automatically get upgraded to it.
Slide — Explained
Slide restricts upgrades to only within the same institute. For example: if you got NIT Trichy Mechanical, choosing Slide means you are open to upgrading to NIT Trichy ECE or CSE, but not to a completely different college. Use Slide when you are committed to a specific college but want a better branch there.
Freeze — Explained
Freeze means you are fully satisfied with your current seat and want no further changes. Choose Freeze in Round 5 (the final round) because the round ends anyway, or in an earlier round if you are completely happy with your allotment.
Round-by-Round Strategy Guide
| Round | Recommended Option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1 | Float | Many upgrades still possible — too early to settle |
| Round 2 | Float | Good upgrade chances still available |
| Round 3 | Float or Slide | Slide if you love the college; Float if open to different college |
| Round 4 | Float or Freeze | Freeze if satisfied; Float if a big upgrade is still possible |
| Round 5 (Final) | Freeze (mandatory) | Last round — your current seat is your final seat |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change my option from Freeze to Float after selecting it?
No. Once you select Freeze and confirm, it cannot be changed. The system locks your selection. That is why you should never Freeze in early rounds unless absolutely certain.
If I Float and don't get an upgrade, do I keep my current seat?
Yes. If no higher-priority choice opens for your rank, you retain your current allotment. Float carries zero risk of losing your current seat — you can only move up.
What happens if I choose Slide but no better branch opens in the same college?
You retain your current seat in that college. Like Float, Slide carries no downside risk — if no better branch is available, you keep what you have.
Should I choose Freeze in Round 5 even if I want to withdraw?
No. If you want to withdraw from JoSAA entirely (to join a state counselling institute), select Withdraw instead of Freeze. Freezing and then not reporting to the institute can have complications.
