When State Counselling is Better Than JoSAA

  • Your JoSAA rank gives you a poor institute/branch but state counselling gives a much better option
  • You are a West Bengal student — WBJEE gives access to Jadavpur University, which is exceptional
  • You want DTU, NSUT, or IGDTUW in Delhi — these come under JAC Delhi, not JoSAA
  • Your rank is above 1,00,000 General — JoSAA options are very limited but state may have great colleges
  • You want BITS Pilani, Thapar, or VIT — these have their own entrance exams (BITSAT, etc.)

When JoSAA is Better Than State Counselling

  • Your rank gives you a top NIT or IIT seat in JoSAA
  • You are in a state without strong government engineering colleges
  • NIT in your home state through JoSAA is better than state private colleges
  • You have an IIT seat via JEE Advanced — always take it over state options

Withdrawal Rules — What Happens if You Accept Both?

If you get seats in both JoSAA and state counselling, you must withdraw from one. JoSAA has a withdrawal option on the portal — you forfeit the seat acceptance fee paid (usually ₹35,000–₹45,000 depending on category). State counselling also has its own withdrawal deadlines. Plan ahead.

⚠️ Important:Important: If you withdraw from JoSAA after accepting a seat, the acceptance fee is NOT refunded. Factor this into your decision if you are choosing between JoSAA and state counselling seats.

The Best Strategy: Apply Everywhere, Decide Later

Register for every counselling process you are eligible for as soon as they open. Evaluate all allotments when they come in. Choose the best seat overall, and withdraw from the rest. This strategy gives you the maximum number of options with no downside during the registration phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply to both JoSAA and state counselling at the same time?

Yes. JoSAA and state counselling (MHT-CET, WBJEE, KCET, JAC Delhi, etc.) are completely independent processes. You can register and participate in both simultaneously with no conflict.

Which state counselling is best for JEE Main students?

It depends on your state. West Bengal students should definitely apply for WBJEE (Jadavpur University). Delhi students get access to DTU, NSUT, IGDTUW via JAC Delhi. Maharashtra students can get COEP, VJTI via MHT-CET. All are separate from JoSAA.

If I get a seat in both JoSAA and state counselling, which should I choose?

Compare both seats based on college quality, branch, placements, and location. If JoSAA gives you a better college/branch, take it and withdraw from state counselling (and vice versa). You forfeit the seat acceptance fee if you withdraw from JoSAA.

Are DTU and NSUT part of JoSAA?

No. DTU (Delhi Technological University) and NSUT are NOT part of JoSAA. They admit through JAC Delhi counselling using JEE Main rank. Apply separately for JAC Delhi if you want to be considered for these colleges.
