What is NIT Home State Quota?

All NITs in India reserve 50% of their total seats for students from their home state (the state where the NIT is located). The remaining 50% go to students from all other states (Other State / OS quota). This is called the supernumerary Home State (HS) quota.

Home State Cutoffs Are Much More Relaxed

NITBranchGeneral OS ClosingGeneral HS ClosingAdvantage
NIT TrichyCSE~1,250~2,150~70% more relaxed
NIT WarangalCSE~1,010~1,800~78% more relaxed
NIT SurathkalECE~3,800~5,900~55% more relaxed
NIT CalicutCSE~3,500~5,500~57% more relaxed
NIT RourkelaCSE~4,800~7,200~50% more relaxed

How to Qualify for Home State (HS) Quota

Your home state for NIT HS quota is determined by where you studied Class 11 and 12 (or equivalent). Specifically:

  • If you studied Class 11 AND 12 in State X → your home state is State X
  • If you studied Class 12 in State X but Class 11 elsewhere → some NITs accept Class 12 state, others need both
  • If your parents are central government employees who transferred → you may choose any state
  • Domicile / home state certificate is usually verified at document verification stage
💡 Tip:Always fill both HS and OS choices for your home state NIT. The JoSAA algorithm checks both pools and gives you whichever opens first for your rank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get NIT Trichy as a non-Tamil Nadu student?

Yes, via Other State (OS) quota. 50% of NIT Trichy seats are for OS students, but cutoffs are significantly higher than home state. For CSE, OS General closes around rank 1,250 vs HS around 2,150.

What document proves home state eligibility for NIT?

Typically, your Class 12 school certificate, transfer certificate, or domicile certificate showing you studied/lived in the state is sufficient. The exact requirement varies slightly by NIT — check the specific NIT's website.

If I am from UP, can I benefit at MNNIT Allahabad?

Yes. UP students applying for MNNIT Allahabad (NIT Allahabad) get home state quota benefit. HS quota cutoffs are around 50–70% more relaxed than OS cutoffs for the same branch.

Is home state quota available at IITs and IIITs too?

No. Home state quota is specific to NITs only. IITs and most IIITs under JoSAA do not have a home state quota — all seats are filled from a single national merit pool.
